Getting Around Moshi
Introduction
Central Moshi is compact and walkable; you mostly need transport for the airport and for day trips. Here’s what each option realistically costs in 2026.
From Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO)
The airport is about 45 km away, 45–60 minutes by road. A pre-arranged private transfer runs roughly $30–40; taxis taken at the airport rank charge more (around $40–50) because of their fixed position. Shared shuttles cost about $10–20 per person but run to a schedule and need booking ahead. For an evening arrival, arrange your pickup in advance and have the driver hold your name — it’s the single thing that makes a late landing painless.
Around Town
Dala dalas (shared minibuses) cost only a few hundred shillings a hop but are crowded and don’t serve the airport. Taxis are easy to find; agree the fare first, with short in-town trips around TSh 3,000–5,000. Ride apps (Bolt, InDrive) work in the region though cars aren’t always available. Boda bodas (motorbike taxis) are cheapest but the least safe — we’d steer you to a taxi, especially at night or with luggage.
Onward Travel
The main bus stand on Mawenzi Road runs intercity coaches — Arusha is about 1–1.5 hours, and Dar es Salaam is a long 8–10 hour haul (roughly $11–29). For day trips to waterfalls, hot springs and Marangu, a round-trip taxi or a car with driver usually beats piecing it together on public transport.
