Day trips from Arusha — common questions

How much does a day trip from Arusha cost?

Day trips from Arusha cost between $195 and $379 per person. Prices include transport, a licensed local guide and entrance or community fees. Shared group departures cost less per person than private tours.

What are the best day trips from Arusha?

The most booked are Chemka Hot Springs Day Trip, Arusha City & Cultural Highlights Tour, Meserani Snake Park & Maasai Culture, Lake Duluti Canoeing Day Trip. Waterfall and hot-spring trips suit a rest day; national park and walking safaris need a full day.

Do East African citizens pay less?

Yes, where a national park is involved. Tanzania National Parks charges East African citizens a lower entry fee than non-residents, and we pass that difference through directly. Community-run attractions charge everyone the same, so those prices do not change. A national ID or East African passport is checked at the gate.

Do I need to book in advance?

Most day trips can be arranged for the following morning, and often the same day. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and group size for confirmation.

For Kenyan & East African travellers

Arusha is a weekend away from Nairobi

No visa. No flight. A national ID and a Saturday morning shuttle is all it takes — and as an East African citizen you pay a fraction of what visitors from outside the region pay at the park gate.

No visa EAC citizens cross at Namanga on a national ID or EAC passport
5–6 hours Nairobi to Arusha by shuttle, 274 km
$25–$35 Typical one-way shuttle fare, hotel pickup usually included
24 hours Namanga border is open every day, all day

What it actually costs you as an East African

Tanzania National Parks charges East African citizens a different entry fee to non-residents. That is a government rate, not our discount — we simply pass it through instead of quoting you the tourist price. Your ID is checked at the gate, the same way TANAPA checks it.

Weekend trips from Arusha — per person
Trip Length East African rate Visitor rate
Chemka Hot Springs Day Trip Day trip $135 $195
Arusha City & Cultural Highlights Tour Day trip $135 $195
Meserani Snake Park & Maasai Culture Day trip $135 $195
Lake Duluti Canoeing Day Trip Day trip $135 $195
Napuru Waterfalls Hike Day trip $148 $208
Tengeru Coffee, Waterfall & Village Tour Day trip $148 $208

Where the two columns match, the attraction charges a community or village fee that is the same for everyone — there is no government difference to pass on, so we do not pretend there is one.

Bring people — the price drops properly

This is not a marketing discount. A day trip costs the same to run whether one person or eight come along: one vehicle, one guide, one tank of fuel. Split that across more people and the per-person price genuinely falls. Only the park or village entrance fee stays per-head.

Per person, East African rate — same trip, different group size
Trip 2 people 4 people 6 people 8 people
Arusha National Park walking safari $131 $84 $68 $60
Napuru Waterfalls hike $105 $60 $45 $38
Lake Duluti canoeing $112 $90 $82 $79
Chemka Hot Springs $108 $61 $45 $37

Worked out from real costs — current diesel prices, actual park and village fees, and one vehicle divided by the number of seats used. Our margin is the same at two people as at eight; you are simply sharing the fixed costs. Groups above eight need a second vehicle, so ask and we will price it properly rather than guess.

Coming with friends, colleagues or family? Tell me how many and I will send the exact per-person figure for your group before you commit to anything.

Getting here from Nairobi

  • Shuttle — daily departures, typically 8:00am (the reliable one) and 2:00pm. Around 5–6 hours to Arusha including the border stop. Most operators collect from Nairobi hotels.
  • Driving yourself — about 4.5–5 hours on the A104 via Namanga. Check your insurance covers Tanzania before you set off.
  • At the border — allow 30 to 60 minutes. Take your valuables off the bus with you rather than leaving them on board. Ignore anyone offering to speed things up for a fee; the official process is free.
  • What to carry — your national ID or EAC passport. A yellow fever certificate is checked. That is genuinely it for East African citizens.
Travelling as a group? From $110 per person for three days at East African rates — 4 to 25 people. See group pricing →
Tell me when you are crossing and I will build the weekend around it.
Getting here

Airport & border transfers

Fixed prices, per vehicle rather than per person, and the same figure whether you land at midday or midnight. We track the flight, so a delay is our problem.

Private transfer, per vehicle (up to 4 people)
RouteFromNotes
Kilimanjaro International (JRO) to Moshi $45 About 45 minutes. We meet you inside arrivals with your name, not in the car park.
Kilimanjaro International (JRO) to Arusha $60 About 1 hour 15. Fixed price whatever time you land — night arrivals cost the same.
Arusha Airport (ARK) to town $25 Fifteen minutes. This is the small airport for bush flights, not the international one.
Namanga border to Arusha $55 For travellers coming down from Nairobi on the shuttle. Tell us your crossing time and we are there — no negotiating a fare after five hours on a bus.
Namanga border to Moshi $85 Around 3 hours. Worth it if your trip starts on the Kilimanjaro side.

Coming from Kenya — common questions

Do Kenyans need a visa for Tanzania?

No. East African Community citizens — Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan — enter Tanzania on a national ID or EAC passport. No visa and no visa fee. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is checked at the border.

How long does it take to get from Nairobi to Arusha?

About 5–6 hours by shuttle bus, covering 274 km via the Namanga border, including 30–60 minutes for immigration. Driving yourself takes about 4.5–5 hours on the A104. Shuttles typically leave Nairobi at 8:00am and 2:00pm and cost around $25–$35 one way.

Do East Africans pay less for Tanzanian national parks?

Yes, substantially. Tanzania National Parks sets a separate entry fee for East African citizens that is a fraction of the non-resident rate — Arusha National Park is roughly $115 per person for an EAC citizen against about $186 for a foreign visitor on the same guided day. Your national ID is checked at the gate.

Do you give group discounts?

The price per person falls as the group grows, because a day trip costs the same to run whether one person or eight come: one vehicle, one guide, one tank of fuel. Split across more people, the per-person cost genuinely drops — a Chemka Hot Springs day is around $108 each for two people and closer to $37 each for eight. Only the park or village entrance fee stays per head.

Is the Namanga border open at night?

Yes. Namanga is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is the busiest crossing between Kenya and Tanzania. Most shuttle traffic crosses mid-morning, so arriving outside that window usually means shorter queues.

Can you do Arusha as a weekend trip from Nairobi?

Comfortably. Leave Nairobi on the 8:00am shuttle Saturday, be in Arusha by early afternoon, do a full day trip on Sunday and travel back Sunday evening or Monday morning. Waterfalls, hot springs, coffee farms and a national park walking safari all fit inside a single day.
