Day by day
Most people use Moshi as a staging post — arrive, sleep, climb, leave. That is a shame, because it is one of the most walkable towns in Tanzania and it has a specific history worth two hours of your time.
The walk starts in the centre, near the clock tower. Moshi grew as a railhead: the German line reached here in 1912, and the town was built to move coffee down from the Chagga slopes to the coast. That is still the shape of it — you can read the trade in the buildings.
The old railway station is the anchor of the walk. It is a colonial-era structure and the line still exists, though passenger service is a shadow of what it was. Standing on the platform with Kilimanjaro directly behind you is one of the better views in town and almost nobody photographs it.
Moshi Central Market is the heart of the walk. It is loud, dense and entirely real — this is where people shop, not a craft market for visitors. Spices, dried fish from the coast, mounds of tomatoes and greens, kitenge fabric in stacks, and the coffee traders. Your guide will negotiate on your behalf if you want to buy, and will tell you when a price is fair rather than pushing you towards a relative’s stall.
Then coffee. Moshi has a genuine café culture — unusual in Tanzania — because it sits at the centre of the growing region. We stop somewhere the local roasters drink, not somewhere designed for tourists.
The walk also takes in the Askari monument, the mosque and cathedral within a few streets of each other, and the ordinary residential blocks where you can see how the town actually lives.
Duration: two to three hours at an easy pace, entirely on foot, mostly flat.
Best time: Early morning, when the market is at full volume and the temperature is still reasonable. Kilimanjaro is also most likely to be clear before about 9am — by midday it has usually built its own cloud and disappeared entirely.

Once we understand what you actually want we build an itinerary with real camps and real costs, and we will tell you where your budget is not going to stretch to what you have described. No deposit is requested until you have seen the full plan in writing.
Can you help if something goes wrong during the trip?
That is the main reason to book with a local agency. Every guest gets a 24-hour number that reaches a person in Arusha. We handle hospital runs, lost passports, police reports, replacement flights, and the mundane things — a chemist run, a phone repair, groceries to a lodge. A full day. Pickup from your hotel in the morning, back in the late afternoon or early evening — exact times depend where you are staying.
