Arusha or Moshi: Where Should You Stay?
In short: stay in Arusha if your trip is mainly safari — every Northern Circuit safari starts here. Stay in Moshi if you are climbing Kilimanjaro or want Materuni and Chemka. They are close: a private transfer between them is priced per car.
| Arusha | Moshi | |
|---|---|---|
| Best base for | Safaris (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire), Arusha National Park | Kilimanjaro, Materuni waterfall, Chemka hot springs |
| Day trips nearby | Napuru waterfall, Lake Duluti, Meserani, city walk | Materuni, Chemka, Chagga tunnels, Mailisita waterfall |
| Feel | Bigger, busier, more restaurants and nightlife | Smaller, calmer, Kilimanjaro views on clear mornings |

My honest advice
Doing both safari and Kilimanjaro sights? Sleep a few nights in each — I will move you between them in a private car and pick you up at Kilimanjaro Airport, which sits between the two.

Arusha if your trip is mainly safari; Moshi if you are climbing Kilimanjaro or visiting Materuni and Chemka. Kilimanjaro Airport is between the two.
