Materuni Waterfalls & Coffee Day Trip

The road out of Moshi climbs almost immediately. Within fifteen minutes the town’s dust gives way to banana shade, and the temperature drops enough that you notice it on your arms. Materuni sits at around 1,300 metres on Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes — the last village before the national park boundary — and it is one of the few places on this mountain where the Chagga way of farming is still visible in every direction rather than preserved for visitors.

Morning: We collect you from your hotel and drive the 13 kilometres up to Materuni village, registering at the village office on arrival. This is where the community fee is paid, and it goes to the village rather than to an operator — worth knowing, because it is the reason the trail is maintained and the guides are local men and women rather than staff bussed in from town.

The walk to the falls takes about 45 minutes each way. It is not difficult, but it is not flat either: the path drops through banana and coffee intercropping, crosses a stream, and narrows where the forest closes in. Wear shoes with grip. In the wet months the last section is genuinely slippery and we take it slowly.

Then the trees open and you hear it before you see it. Materuni Waterfall drops roughly 80 metres off a basalt lip in a single fall, into a pool that is cold enough to take your breath for the first ten seconds. Most people swim. The spray reaches you well before the water does.

Midday: Back at the village, the coffee. This is not a demonstration — you do the work. You pick ripe cherries, pulp them, wash them, and lay them out. Then the roasting: green beans in a clay pot over a wood fire, stirred constantly, while someone sings the grinding song that sets the rhythm for the wooden mortar. The Chagga have grown Arabica on these slopes since the late nineteenth century, and the smallholdings here are often under an acre — coffee grown between the banana stems rather than in rows, because the bananas provide the shade the plants need.

You drink what you ground. It is strong, unfiltered and better than it has any right to be.

Lunch is Chagga food cooked in the village — usually machalari, the banana and meat stew that is the everyday dish of this mountain, alongside rice and vegetables.

Afternoon: We return to Moshi by mid-afternoon, which leaves the evening free. If you are climbing Kilimanjaro in the next few days, this is a useful walk to have in your legs.

What to bring: swimwear, a towel, shoes you do not mind getting wet, and a light rain layer between March and May. There is no shop at the falls.

Honest note: this is the most-booked day trip in Moshi and you will not have the waterfall to yourself, particularly between 11am and 2pm. If you want it quiet, we leave early. If you want it quieter still, ask us about Mailisita instead — smaller falls, almost nobody there.
