Day by day
This is the slower, closer version of the Materuni day — no long hike, no waterfall, more time sitting with people and understanding how the mountain economy actually works. Good for families, for anyone with mobility limits, and for anyone genuinely interested in coffee rather than just the photograph of coffee.
Morning: We visit a smallholder Arabica farm on Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes. Most Chagga coffee holdings are tiny — often well under a hectare — and intercropped with banana, which shades the coffee and produces food and beer besides. The farmer walks you through the plot and explains what is happening in the current season: flowering, cherry development, or harvest, depending on when you come.
Then the process, hands on. Pick, pulp, wash, dry, roast in a clay pot over wood, grind in the wooden mortar with the song that keeps the rhythm. Every stage is done the way it has been done here for a century, and it takes long enough that you understand why a kilogram of good coffee costs what it costs.
You drink it fresh. Ask about the price the farmer gets versus the price you pay in Europe or America — it is an honest conversation and one most farmers here are willing to have.
Midday: A Chagga cultural walk through the village. Traditional homestead architecture, the irrigation furrows that carry mountain water between farms — a system that predates any colonial engineering here — and local history, including the clan structure that organised this mountain long before there was a Tanzania.
Lunch with a local family: machalari, rice, vegetables, sometimes mbege if the household brews.
Afternoon: Return to Moshi, back by mid-afternoon.
Best time: The main harvest runs roughly July to January and is the most interesting period to visit, but there is always something happening on a coffee farm and the process demonstration runs year-round.
Who this suits: anyone who wants a real conversation rather than a performance, travellers with children, and people who have a rest day before or after a climb.

Why book with a local agency rather than an international one?

No deposit is requested until you have seen the full plan in writing.
Can you help if something goes wrong during the trip?
That is the main reason to book with a local agency. Every guest gets a 24-hour number that reaches a person in Arusha. We handle hospital runs, lost passports, police reports, replacement flights, and the mundane things — a chemist run, a phone repair, groceries to a lodge. Do you do custom itineraries?
Almost everything we run is custom. The itineraries on this site are starting points that show what is realistic in a given number of days. Tell us your dates, your budget, and the two or three things you would be disappointed to miss, and we will build around those rather than around a package.
How do payments work?
A deposit confirms the booking and the balance is due before travel, with the exact terms in writing before you pay anything. Park fees and camp deposits are paid on to the authorities and the camps — we show you that breakdown. We do not take card payment against an indicative price; you get a firm quote first.

Not on this particular trip. The entrance fee here is a community or village fee, which is the same for everyone — there is no government differential to pass on, so we do not pretend there is one.

How long is the day?
A full day. Pickup from your hotel in the morning, back in the late afternoon or early evening — exact times depend where you are staying.
If you are jet-lagged or acclimatising for a climb, say so and we will tell you honestly whether it is too much.
