Day by day
Lake Chala is a crater lake sitting on the Tanzania–Kenya border, about 50 kilometres east of Moshi, and the reason to go is that it looks like nowhere else in this region. The crater walls drop roughly 100 metres to the water. The lake is deep — over 90 metres in places — and it changes colour through the year from deep blue to a striking blue-green depending on the season and the algae.
Morning: The drive takes around 90 minutes, the last part on dirt through sisal estates and small settlements. You arrive at the rim, and the lake is entirely hidden until you are almost on top of it: the crater is invisible from the approach, and then the ground simply falls away.
Getting down to the water is a proper descent — a steep path with steps cut in places, about 15 minutes down and rather longer coming back up. It is the only real effort of the day.
Midday: At the shore there is a small beach area. Kayaking is the best way to experience Chala; on the water you get the full scale of the crater walls, and you can paddle towards the invisible line where Tanzania becomes Kenya. Swimming is possible in the designated area.
One honest safety note: Chala has a history of crocodile presence and there was a fatality here some years ago. Local guidance now designates where it is safe to enter the water, and we follow it strictly. If you would rather not swim, kayaking gives you the lake without the question.
The birdlife around the rim is excellent — over 200 species recorded — and the forest that clings to the crater walls holds vervet monkeys and, occasionally, baboons.
Lunch is a picnic on the rim with the lake below and, on a clear day, Kilimanjaro filling the horizon behind you.
Afternoon: The climb back up, then the drive to Moshi, arriving late afternoon.
What to bring: good shoes for the descent, swimwear if you plan to get in, sun protection — the rim is exposed — and a camera with something wide, because the crater does not fit into a phone frame.
Best time: Year-round. The colour is often at its most intense towards the end of the dry season.

Why book with a local agency rather than an international one?

Do you do custom itineraries?
Almost everything we run is custom. The itineraries on this site are starting points that show what is realistic in a given number of days. Tell us your dates, your budget, and the two or three things you would be disappointed to miss, and we will build around those rather than around a package.

A deposit confirms the booking and the balance is due before travel, with the exact terms in writing before you pay anything. Park fees and camp deposits are paid on to the authorities and the camps — we show you that breakdown. We do not take card payment against an indicative price; you get a firm quote first.

Not on this particular trip. The entrance fee here is a community or village fee, which is the same for everyone — there is no government differential to pass on, so we do not pretend there is one.

A full day. Pickup from your hotel in the morning, back in the late afternoon or early evening — exact times depend where you are staying.
If you are jet-lagged or acclimatising for a climb, say so and we will tell you honestly whether it is too much.

Where a national park is involved, yes — Tanzania National Parks charges East African citizens a lower entrance fee than non-residents and we pass that straight through. Community-run attractions charge everyone the same, so those prices do not change. A national ID or EAC passport is checked at the gate.
