A 3–4 hour guided walk through Arusha town: the Clock Tower, the Old German Boma museum, the Arusha Declaration Museum, Central Market, the Maasai market and local coffee.
Arusha is a working city — the safari capital, the seat of the East African Court of Justice, a gemstone town — and most visitors only see the road from the airport to the lodge. This walk is the city on foot, at street level, with a licensed guide who lives here.
The Clock Tower is where we start. Locals will tell you it marks the halfway point between Cairo and Cape Town; whether or not that is true, every road in town is measured from it, and it is the easiest meeting point in Arusha.
The Old German Boma is a few minutes away: a fort built in the 1890s that now holds the Natural History Museum, with the story of human origins from Olduvai Gorge and the wildlife of the north. From there it is a short walk to the Uhuru Torch monument and the Arusha Declaration Museum, which tells how Julius Nyerere’s 1967 declaration shaped modern Tanzania.
Then the markets. Soko Kuu, the Central Market, is where Arusha actually shops: spices, dried fish from the coast, mountains of tomatoes and greens, kitenge fabric in stacks. The Maasai curio market is the place for beadwork and carvings — your guide bargains for you, and tells you honestly when a price is fair.
Tanzanite is found only in the Merelani hills, an hour from here, and the Tanzanite Experience explains how it is mined and graded — free to visit, no pressure to buy. We finish with coffee in a local café, grown on the slopes you have just been looking at.
Practical: about 3 to 4 hours on foot at an easy pace, on flat town streets. Start at the Clock Tower or have a tuk-tuk collect you from your hotel. Wear comfortable shoes, bring small notes for the market, and ask before photographing people.

Where a national park is involved, yes — Tanzania National Parks charges East African citizens a lower entrance fee than non-residents and we pass that straight through. Community-run attractions charge everyone the same, so those prices do not change. A national ID or EAC passport is checked at the gate.
