Arusha is a working city — the safari capital, the diplomatic seat of the East African Community, a gemstone town — and most visitors see only the road from the airport to the lodge. This day is the city on its own terms.
The Cultural Heritage Centre is the anchor. It is far larger than it appears from the road: a multi-storey gallery holding one of the biggest collections of African art on the continent, from Makonde ebony carving through contemporary Tanzanian painting, plus a serious tanzanite counter downstairs. You can spend twenty minutes or two hours. Entry to the galleries is free, which surprises people.
The Tanzanite Experience is the other anchor, and it is genuinely educational rather than a sales floor with a story attached. Tanzanite is found in exactly one place on Earth — the Merelani Hills, about forty minutes from where you are standing — and the museum walks through the geology that made it, the 1967 discovery, the mining conditions, and how to tell a real stone from the glass and synthetic material sold on the street. Whether or not you intend to buy, you will leave knowing how not to be cheated.
Shanga is the part of the day people write home about. It is a workshop employing people with disabilities, producing glass from recycled bottles, beadwork, and woven textiles. You watch the glassblowing — the furnace is right there, and the pieces are made in front of you. It sits in the grounds of the Arusha Coffee Lodge among the coffee bushes, and it is calm in a way the rest of the day is not.
The Maasai Market is the loudest hour. Carvings, beadwork, kangas, paintings, and hard bargaining as standard. Your guide’s job here is to keep the pressure off you and to tell you honestly what things are worth. Expect to start at roughly a third of the opening price. It is a game and it is meant to be enjoyed, but it is easier with somebody beside you.
If there is time: the Arusha Declaration Museum, covering Nyerere and the 1967 policy that shaped modern Tanzania, or the Old Boma. Both are small and both are worth the half hour.
Practical: Almost all of this is indoors or shaded, which makes it a good rainy-season day and a good hot-day option. Distances are short. Bring cash in small denominations for the market.
Who this suits: your first or last day in Tanzania, travellers who want to understand where they are rather than only what lives there, and anybody shopping for something real to take home.

A full day. Pickup from your hotel in the morning, back in the late afternoon or early evening — exact times depend where you are staying.
