Arusha Nightlife & Bars
Introduction
Arusha’s after-dark scene is livelier than most safari city expectations. The city has a substantial local population, an expat and NGO community, and enough passing tourists that venues have developed properly. The biggest nights are Friday, Saturday and Sunday; locals tend to party on Sundays more than anywhere else in Tanzania. Most venues don’t get going until 10 PM or later — arriving at 9 PM you’ll often be the only person there.
Best Bars & Evening Venues
Via Via Cultural Café (Boma Road, beside the Regional Museum) is the most famous evening spot for travellers and expats. Thursday night is the main event — the relaxed daytime café transforms into a proper nightclub with live music, dancing and a packed outdoor area. Good cocktails at reasonable prices. Rest of the week it’s films, live music, and a chilled-out atmosphere. The best place to meet other travellers and local people.
The Blue Heron has live music in the evenings and an extensive drinks menu. The garden setting — expansive lawns, mature trees, Mount Meru views — makes it one of the most pleasant evening venues in Arusha. Food available until late. More restaurant-bar than club.
Kipong Bar and Lounge (Makongoro Road, near the Police Station) was voted Best Bar in Arusha 2022–2023. Open until 11 PM, DJs, karaoke nights, drinks and local cuisine. Popular with a mixed local and tourist crowd.
The Pillars Bar and Lounge (Njiro Road) features live band performances from the Pioneer Band, live sports screenings and DJ sets on Fridays. A proper Arusha local venue — not a tourist trap.
Boogaloo Nightclub (Njiro Complex, Arusha’s main shopping centre) has a sports bar, cocktail bar, pool tables, VIP lounge and a grill. Multicultural crowd. Known for its Nyama Choma BBQ before the dancing starts.
Zeze Lounge is open 24 hours and offers games (pool, foosball, cards), dancing, local music and social atmosphere. Late-night crowd; things get going around midnight.
The Lively Lady Bar & Grill is an Indonesian-Tanzanian themed local bar with eclectic decor, tribal art, good cocktails and a genuinely friendly atmosphere. Tucked down a side street — worth finding.
Khan’s Barbeque is the place for evening nyama choma (roast goat and beef) with cold beer and outdoor seating. Not a club — a grillhouse — but one of the best evening eating experiences in Arusha.
The Clock Tower Area
The area around the Arusha Clock Tower is the centre of evening activity in the city — Fifi’s Restaurant, several bars, and pedestrian activity into the evening. Good for a walk, a beer, and people-watching.
Rooftop Options
Kitamu Coffee (Gran Meliá rooftop) does evening cocktails with Mount Meru views. The Urban Rooftop at one of the city’s newer hotel properties is good for sunset drinks. Ask locally for the current best rooftop — these shift seasonally.
Safety Notes
Arusha is safer than many African cities at night but the usual precautions apply: avoid walking alone after dark (take a taxi, cost $3–6 within the city), keep phones in pockets at busy venues, and stick to the busier, well-lit areas. Your hotel can arrange trusted taxi drivers. The venues listed above are all considered safe for tourists.
