The Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre is both a serious museum and a shopping destination — a sprawling complex of galleries housing Tanzania’s largest private collection of traditional and contemporary East African art and craft. The Tingatinga paintings — a Tanzanian painting style originating in Dar es Salaam in the 1960s, characterised by bright colours and animal subjects — are represented from original masters to contemporary practitioners. The Makonde carving gallery displays some of the most technically extraordinary wood sculptures produced anywhere in Africa. Maasai jewellery, Zanzibar chests, Tanzanite, and safari-quality clothing complete the collection.
Done properly, this is the part people remember longest.
Maasai bomas, Hadzabe hunting mornings at Lake Eyasi, Chagga coffee farms on Kilimanjaro's slopes, Datoga blacksmiths. Done well, a cultural visit is a genuine exchange. Done badly, it is a staged performance for tips, and both exist in Tanzania.
We work only with communities that set their own terms, keep the fee, and decide what is shown. That sometimes means the visit is less polished. It also means the person showing you their home is not performing.

How much is it for my group?

Do East Africans pay less?
Not on this particular trip. The entrance fee here is a community or village fee, which is the same for everyone — there is no government differential to pass on, so we do not pretend there is one.
