Day by day
Arusha National Park is the one most people drive past on their way to somewhere more famous, and it is a mistake. It is 45 minutes from town, it holds three completely different habitats inside 550 square kilometres, and it is one of the very few parks in Tanzania where you are permitted to get out of the vehicle and walk.
Morning: We enter at Momella Gate. The park fee is paid here — currently around USD 45 for non-residents plus VAT, with the ranger fee on top, and East African citizens pay a fraction of that, which we handle for you either way.
The walking safari is the reason to come. You walk with an armed ranger, which is a legal requirement rather than theatre, and the animals behave completely differently when you are on foot. Giraffe let you get closer than they ever would to a vehicle — Arusha NP has an unusually high density of them. Buffalo require respect and the ranger will route you around them. Warthog, bushbuck, waterbuck and zebra are common.
There are no lion here, and elephant are rare. That absence is precisely what makes walking possible, and it changes the experience: without big predators, you spend your attention on the things you would otherwise drive past — dung beetles, tracks, the smell of crushed leaves, the birds.
Midday: The Momella Lakes are a chain of shallow alkaline lakes, each a different colour because each has a different mineral content and algae mix. Flamingo numbers vary through the year but the lakes almost always hold something — pelicans, ducks, herons. Canoeing here is one of the only places in northern Tanzania it is allowed.
Picnic lunch beside the water, usually with Meru above you and, if the day is clear, Kilimanjaro floating on the eastern horizon.
Afternoon: Game drive through the Ngurdoto Crater rim and the montane forest. Ngurdoto is a caldera you look down into rather than drive into — buffalo and warthog on the floor, several hundred metres below. The forest section is where the black-and-white colobus live, and they are reliable: troops in the canopy, tails hanging.
Back in Arusha by late afternoon.
Fitness: The walk is two to three hours at an easy pace on flat ground. Anyone in reasonable health manages it.
What to bring: neutral colours, closed shoes, binoculars, sun protection and a light layer — the forest is cool.
Why this and not a Serengeti day trip: you cannot walk in the Serengeti, it is six hours each way, and it costs several times as much. Arusha NP gives you a genuine safari experience on foot, in a day, from town.

Why book with a local agency rather than an international one?
Because we are here. The company you book with in London or New York subcontracts the actual driving, guiding and problem-solving to someone in Arusha — usually to someone like us.
