Day by day
Tengeru sits on Meru’s southern slopes twenty minutes east of Arusha, and it has been running community tourism longer than almost anywhere else in the region — long enough that the money genuinely reaches the households, which is the hard part everywhere else.
Morning: We drive out through Tengeru’s market, which is one of the busiest agricultural markets in northern Tanzania and worth slowing down for even if we are not stopping. Then up into the farms.
The coffee walk is led by the growers. You go through the plot — Arabica under banana shade, the standard smallholder pattern on both these mountains — and get the full cycle explained by someone whose income depends on it: flowering, cherry set, selective picking, pulping, the fermentation stage that most demonstrations skip, drying, hulling.
Then the roasting. Clay pot, wood fire, constant stirring, and the wooden mortar and pestle for grinding, with the song. You do this yourself. It takes longer than you expect and your arm will tell you about it afterwards.
Midday: The walk to the waterfall. It is a shorter, gentler hike than Napuru — maybe 30 minutes — through farmland and into a wooded gully. There is a rope swing over the pool, which is the part every group ends up spending too long on. The water is cold and clear.
Lunch is cooked by a family in the village: banana stew, rice, greens, beans, whatever the season is producing.
Afternoon: There is usually time to walk through the village properly — the irrigation channels, the school if it is a schoolday and the head teacher is willing, and the ordinary business of a mountain farming community. Back in Arusha by mid-afternoon.
Combines well with: Lake Duluti, which is fifteen minutes away. The two together make a full and varied day — canoe in the morning, coffee and waterfall after — and we can price them as one trip.
What to bring: walking shoes, swimwear, a hat. The altitude here means it is cooler than Arusha but the sun is strong.

Why book with a local agency rather than an international one?
Because we are here. The company you book with in London or New York subcontracts the actual driving, guiding and problem-solving to someone in Arusha — usually to someone like us. Not on this particular trip. The entrance fee here is a community or village fee, which is the same for everyone — there is no government differential to pass on, so we do not pretend there is one.

How long is the day?
A full day. Pickup from your hotel in the morning, back in the late afternoon or early evening — exact times depend where you are staying.
If you are jet-lagged or acclimatising for a climb, say so and we will tell you honestly whether it is too much.
