A guided walk through Stone Town threads the narrow lanes past coral-stone buildings, carved doors, mosques and former merchant houses. Stops typically include the Old Fort, the former slave market site and the bustling markets, ending at the Forodhani waterfront.
It is the best introduction to Zanzibar’s layered Swahili, Arab, Indian and European history.

Nothing prepares you for how different the bush is at walking pace. In a vehicle you are a moving object animals ignore; on foot you are part of the landscape, and everything — the smell of crushed sage, the size of an elephant footprint, how much noise you make — becomes real.
Walks focus on what a drive skips: tracks, dung, medicinal plants, insects, birds, the geology. You may not see a single large mammal and it will still be the walk you talk about afterwards.
An armed ranger is mandatory and leads. Groups are small, you walk in single file, and you follow instructions without discussion — that is the trade for being allowed out of the vehicle.
