Mnemba Atoll Snorkelling

What to Expect
  • Clear-water reef snorkelling
  • Abundant reef fish
  • Boat trip from northeast beaches
  • Popular dive site

The reef around Mnemba Atoll, off Zanzibar’s northeast coast, is one of the island’s best-known snorkelling and diving areas, with clear water and abundant reef fish. Trips depart by boat from the nearby beaches; the atoll itself is a private island, so visits are to the surrounding waters.

Why you’ll love it

Mnemba, Mafia's whale sharks, and Pemba's walls.

Zanzibar's Mnemba Atoll is the best-known snorkelling in the archipelago — clear water, healthy coral, turtles and reef fish in numbers. Mafia is the serious one: its whale sharks are largely resident rather than migratory, which is unusual globally, and you snorkel with them in shallow bay water rather than open ocean.

Pemba is for divers. The channel drops away steeply very close to shore, producing wall dives with visibility and pelagics that Unguja cannot match.

Whale shark season runs roughly October to March. Diving is good year-round outside the April–May rains.
