Materuni with two guests: the waterfall, fresh coffee and a Chagga lunch
Field note · 13 October 2026 · by Shaiya
A day on the green slopes of Kilimanjaro above Moshi. First the walk down to Materuni waterfall, one of the tallest around Moshi, then back up to the village to make coffee the Chagga way: roasting the beans over the fire, pounding them in the wooden mortar, and drinking the cup you made yourself.
Lunch is local food served in clay pots. Our guests even wrote their names in the fresh coffee grounds.
