Mount Meru reaches 4,562 metres and is climbed over several days from Momella Gate in Arusha National Park, accompanied by an armed ranger. The route passes through forest and moorland with wildlife on the lower slopes and a dramatic crater rim near the summit.
It is widely used as an acclimatisation climb before attempting Kilimanjaro.
Africa's highest point, and a genuine physical undertaking.
Kilimanjaro requires no technical climbing, which misleads people into underestimating it. It is a long walk to 5,895 metres, and altitude does not care about fitness. Success correlates most strongly with how many days you take.
Six-day routes have markedly lower success rates than eight-day routes on the same mountain. The extra days are not padding; they are acclimatisation, and they are the difference between summiting and turning back at 4,600 metres.
Summit night starts around midnight from Barafu or Kibo, in the cold and the dark, and takes six to eight hours. It is the hardest thing most people who do it have ever done.

Families
Minimum age 10 on most routes. Realistically 14+ for the summit push.
Couples
A genuinely shared achievement — and a hard one. Many couples rate it the best thing they have done together.

Very common. You join a small group and you will not feel alone by day two.
Accessibility
Not wheelchair accessible. Requires sustained hiking at altitude.
