Tanzanite exists in one place on Earth: the Merelani Hills, about forty minutes from where this museum stands, discovered by accident in 1967 when a Maasai herder noticed blue crystals after a bushfire. Tiffany & Co. named it the following year, and every tanzanite ever sold, anywhere, traces back to those same hills.
The museum walks through that discovery, the geology that makes tanzanite unique, and the realities of the mining itself — including the conditions miners actually work in, which most retail displays skip entirely. It is more honest than most jewellery-shop presentations of the stone, and it is genuinely useful even if you have no intention of buying: you leave able to recognise the glass and synthetic imitations sold on the street, which is worth knowing before anyone in town offers you a deal.
Whether or not you buy is entirely up to you — there is no pressure built into the visit, and the value stands on its own as a half hour of real geology and Tanzanian economic history.
