Tarangire Game Drive

What to Expect
  • Iconic baobab scenery
  • Large dry-season elephant herds
  • Strong birdlife
  • Northern circuit park

Tarangire is known for its ancient baobabs and for the elephant herds that gather along the Tarangire River, especially in the dry season. Game drives also turn up lion, giraffe, zebra and a rich variety of birds.

It sits within reach of Mto wa Mbu and is commonly combined with Manyara and Ngorongoro.

Why you’ll love it

The core of every safari — and there is more skill in it than people expect.

A game drive is three to four hours in an open-roofed 4x4 with a guide who is reading the landscape continuously: tracks in the road, the direction vultures are circling, the alarm calls of impala and baboon that mean a predator is moving. Most of what you see, you see because someone knew where to look.

Mornings leave around 0615 because predators hunt in the cool and rest through the heat. Afternoons run from about 1600 until the gates close at 1800. The middle of the day is genuinely dead, and pushing through it is how first-timers exhaust themselves by day three.

Hour by hour

Game Drive

A day built around when animals actually move

  1. 05:30

    Coffee in the dark

A flask outside your tent. Cold, quiet, and the bush is already awake — you can hear it before you can see it.

  2. 06:15

    Gates open, you move

The first hour is the best hour. Predators are still active, the light is low and gold, and nobody else is out yet.

  3. 07:30

    The morning finds its rhythm

Tracks in the sand, vultures circling, alarm calls from impala. Your guide is reading three things at once while you are still waking up.

  4. 10:00

    Back for brunch

Proper food, a shower, and the realisation that you have been awake for five hours and it feels like two.

  5. 11:00

    The dead middle

Animals rest and so should you. Sleep, read, sit and watch the waterhole. Resisting this is how people burn out by day three.

  6. 16:00

    Out again

The light turns. Everything that slept through the heat starts moving, and the plains go orange.

  7. 18:00

    Gates close, sundowner

A drink somewhere with a view, then back in the dark with the spotlight picking up eyes at the roadside.

  8. 19:30

    Dinner, then early bed

Because tomorrow starts at 05:30 again, and by day three you will be awake before the alarm.
