Introduction

Arusha punches above its weight for food. As Tanzania’s safari capital — and a city with a large expat and NGO community — it has developed a genuinely varied dining scene: proper fine dining at estate lodges outside the city, excellent Indian vegetarian, reliable Italian pizza, Ethiopian tej and injera, and plenty of local Swahili grills. The following reflects honest local knowledge, not aggregator ranking.

Fine Dining

Onsea House is the editorial pick for 2026 — a Belgian-owned guesthouse in the hills above town with food that regularly shocks visitors who were expecting safari buffet standards. The chef changes the menu daily based on what’s available; the vegan coconut curry and wood-fired pizzas are both exceptional. Book 3–5 weeks ahead. Expect to spend around $80–100 per person for dinner with wine.

Arusha Coffee Lodge Grill Room (Elewana) sits on a working coffee estate near the airport. The à la carte menu centres on grilled meats and curries with Swahili spice influence; their Chips Mayai with estate coffee is a running highlight. Arguably the best wine list in Arusha. Mains around $30–45.

Sanna Café is the city’s most talked-about modern restaurant for 2026 — creative cooking, good cocktails, confident service. Worth booking a day ahead.

Mid-Range & Local Favourites

The Blue Heron is the city’s most convivial venue: alfresco tables under mature trees, Italian pizza, generous salads, Mount Meru views, and a Sunday all-you-can-eat brunch that’s become an Arusha institution. Walk-ins welcome most days; Sunday book ahead.

Via Via (Boma Road, beside the Regional Museum) does excellent Tanzanian and international food all week, but it has two nights that matter more than the rest. Thursday is the one everyone means when they say ‘go to Via Via’ — karaoke and a live band, roughly 10,000 TZS on the door, and it is consistently the best live music night in Arusha. Saturday is different and quieter: a proper dinner and dance, traditional buffet, live music from early evening rather than a late party. Friday is a normal night here — the city’s Friday energy is at The Hub and Aces instead, not at Via Via. Good cocktails, reasonable prices either way.

Five Chutneys is Arusha’s finest Indian vegetarian restaurant — flavorful curries, good thali, vegan-friendly, budget-friendly fine dining at around $12–18 per head. Walk-ins mostly possible.

Spices and Herbs Ethiopian Restaurant is a local institution: every communal platter of injera, lentils, curries and greens is made with real care. One of the most reliably satisfying meals in the city at $10–15 per person.

Khan’s Barbeque is the classic Arusha nyama choma (roast meat) stop — outdoor grilling, cold Kilimanjaro beer, generous portions. Local prices. Cash only.

Kwa Morombo is not a restaurant — it is a street-food market, well known specifically for nyama choma, and it is a different kind of experience from Khan’s or Andrew’s entirely. Plastic chairs, charcoal smoke, meat grilled right in front of you and eaten with your hands. Cheaper than either, genuinely local, and honest expectations matter here: it is not polished, service can be slow, and the point is the experience rather than a refined meal. Go hungry, go with someone who knows it, and do not expect a menu.

Budget Eats

The Arusha Central Market (Soko Kuu) has food stalls from early morning serving pilau rice, chapati, mishkaki (meat skewers) and locally grown fruit at genuinely local prices ($1–3 per meal). Uzunguni City Park near the clock tower is a reliable mid-budget spot for breakfast and light meals with outdoor seating.

Practical Notes

Most Arusha restaurants are open for lunch and dinner; kitchen hours typically end at 9:30–10 PM. The fine dining options (Onsea House, Coffee Lodge) require advance booking, especially in peak season (July–October). Most accept card; smaller local spots are cash only. Tips of 10% are customary at sit-down restaurants.

FAQ

What is the best restaurant in Arusha?

Local street food: $2–5. Budget restaurants: $6–12. Mid-range (Blue Heron, Via Via, Five Chutneys): $10–20. Fine dining (Coffee Lodge, Onsea House): $40–100+ per person with drinks.

What Tanzanian food actually is

Most visitors eat at their hotel for a week and leave without trying any of it, which is a waste. The staples are worth knowing before you order.

  • Ugali — stiff maize meal, eaten with the right hand, torn off and used to scoop. It is the national staple and it is deliberately bland: it carries the sauce, it is not the flavour.
  • Nyama choma — grilled meat, usually goat or beef, ordered by weight and brought to the table on a board. This is the social meal. You order a kilo, it arrives with kachumbari and chilli, and everyone eats off the same board.
  • Mishkaki — marinated meat skewers over charcoal, sold from street grills in the evening. The best food in Arusha is often the cheapest.
  • Kachumbari — the tomato, onion, chilli and lime salad that comes with everything and cuts the fat.
  • Wali wa nazi — coconut rice, a coastal dish that has travelled inland.
  • Ndizi nyama — green banana and meat stew, the Chagga staple from the Kilimanjaro slopes. Filling and genuinely good.
  • Chipsi mayai — a chip omelette. Exactly what it sounds like, sold everywhere, and better than it has any right to be at 11pm.

What things cost

Typical Arusha meal prices, 2026
Meal Local Mid-range Hotel / fine dining
Lunch (ugali, rice or chips with stew) $2 – $4 $6 – $10 $12 – $20
Dinner main $3 – $6 $8 – $15 $18 – $35
Nyama choma (per kg, shared) $7 – $11 $12 – $18
Mishkaki skewer $0.50 – $1
Soft drink $0.60 – $1 $1.50 – $2.50 $3 – $4

A local place will feed two people properly for under $10. A hotel restaurant will charge that for one starter. Both have their place — the point is knowing which you are walking into.

Eating safely without eating badly

The advice that keeps people well is not “avoid local food.” It is simpler than that:

  • Busy is safe. High turnover means food has not been sitting. An empty restaurant at 8pm is the warning sign, not a cheap one that is full.
  • Hot and freshly cooked beats anything that has been standing under a lamp.
  • Drink bottled or filtered water and check the seal. Ice in established places is usually made from filtered water; at a roadside stall, skip it.
  • Peel your own fruit. Mango and pineapple from a street cart are excellent and safe if you peel them yourself.
  • Salads are the genuine risk, because they are washed rather than cooked. Fine in established restaurants, worth skipping elsewhere.

Dietary requirements

Vegetarian is straightforward — beans, rice, chapati, cooked greens and banana stew are everywhere, and Indian restaurants in Arusha are genuinely good. Vegan takes more explaining, since ghee and stock appear in things that look plant-based; say it clearly and ask.

Halal is widely available; Arusha has a substantial Muslim population and most butchers are halal by default. Gluten-free is harder to explain but ugali and rice are naturally gluten-free, which covers most meals.

Serious allergies need a written note in Swahili. Ask us and we will write one for you before you travel.

A specific place worth knowing: Andrew’s

On Jandu Road, Andrew’s is the local choma reference point — nyama choma, kuku choma, mbuzi choma, cooked on an open grill and served with ugali and salad. It rates consistently well with both residents and visitors, open daily from midday until late, and works equally for a relaxed lunch or a proper evening out with a full bar and TVs for sport. Reserve is not really a thing here; you turn up and eat.

When to eat

Lunch runs roughly 12:30 to 2:30 and is the main meal for most Tanzanians. Dinner service in local places starts around 7 and the kitchen often closes by 9:30 — earlier than visitors expect. Hotel restaurants run later. Street grills are an evening thing and get going after dark.

Ramadan changes the pattern significantly in a city with this many Muslim residents; many local places close during daylight and open late. Worth knowing if your trip falls in it.

Common questions

Is street food safe in Arusha?

Generally yes if it is hot, freshly cooked and busy. Mishkaki grills and chipsi mayai stands are eaten by everybody and are fine. The genuine risks are uncooked salads, unpeeled fruit and ice from unknown sources.

How much does a meal cost in Arusha?

$2–$4 at a local place, $8–$15 mid-range, $18–$35 at a hotel restaurant. Nyama choma is $7–$11 per kilo and is meant to be shared.

What should I eat in Arusha?

Nyama choma with kachumbari at least once, mishkaki from an evening grill, and ndizi nyama — the Chagga banana and meat stew from the Kilimanjaro slopes. Chipsi mayai if you are out late.

Can vegetarians eat well in Arusha?

Easily. Beans, rice, chapati, cooked greens and banana stew are on every menu, and the Indian restaurants are good. Vegan needs more explaining because of ghee and stock.
