Highlights
  • World-class wall diving
  • whale sharks
  • manta rays
  • clove plantations
  • flying foxes
  • complete solitude
  • Pemba Channel pelagics

Pemba Island is one of the Indian Ocean’s most spectacular and least-visited dive destinations. The island sits in the Pemba Channel, where deep ocean currents sweep past dramatic coral walls dropping to 1,000 metres. The visibility and fish diversity are exceptional — whale sharks, manta rays, and vast schools of pelagic fish are regularly encountered. On land, Pemba is a landscape of clove and coconut plantations, fishing villages, and dense forest harbouring flying foxes — enormous fruit bats with metre-wide wingspans. A tiny number of lodges means genuine solitude.
