When to Visit Tanzania: A Month-by-Month Guide

There’s no single “best” month for Tanzania — it depends on whether you’re chasing the wildebeest migration, climbing Kilimanjaro, or just want good beach weather in Zanzibar. Here’s how the year actually breaks down.

Dry season (late June to October)

This is peak safari season, and for good reason: animals cluster around permanent water sources, making game viewing more predictable, and clear skies make for the best Kilimanjaro climbing conditions of the year. It’s also the busiest and most expensive stretch — book lodges and guides well ahead if you’re set on these months.

The wildebeest migration

The migration moves through the Serengeti ecosystem year-round, but the two highlight moments are the calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area (roughly late January to March) and the river crossings in the north (roughly July to September). Which one matters more depends on whether you want newborn calves and predator action, or the dramatic Mara River crossings.

Short rains (November to December)

Short, usually brief afternoon showers rather than all-day rain. Landscapes turn green, birdlife peaks, and prices and crowds both drop from the dry-season high. A reasonable middle ground if you want lower costs without the heaviest rain.

Long rains (March to May)

The quietest and cheapest time to visit, but also the wettest — some lodges close, and rural roads can be difficult. Worth considering only if budget matters more than guaranteed access, or if you’re combining Tanzania with a Zanzibar beach stretch where rain matters less.

Zanzibar specifically

Zanzibar’s dry season roughly matches the mainland’s (June–October, plus January–February), with warm water year-round. The long rains (March–May) hit Zanzibar harder than the northern safari circuit, so it’s the one stretch worth actively avoiding there.
