What a Tanzania Safari Actually Costs

Safari pricing confuses people because two quotes for what looks like the same trip can differ by a factor of four. That is not usually dishonesty. It is that safari cost is dominated by one variable — where you sleep — while everything else stays relatively fixed.

The parts that barely change

Park and conservation fees. Set by TANAPA and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, published, and identical whoever you book through. Serengeti and Ngorongoro sit at the top tier; Tarangire and Manyara a step below; the southern parks lower again. Fees are charged per person per 24 hours from entry, not per calendar day, and they are revised on 1 July each year.

One line item catches almost everyone out: the Ngorongoro crater service fee is charged per vehicle per descent, not per person. On a couple’s trip that is a significant sum attached to one activity; on a group of six it is trivial per head. Any quote that hides this is hiding the wrong thing.

Vehicle and guide. A properly equipped Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, a fridge, charging points and a genuinely experienced driver-guide costs what it costs. This is the wrong place to economise. The difference between a good guide and an average one is the difference between watching a leopard for forty minutes and driving past a tree.

Fuel and distance. Tanzania is large. Arusha to the central Serengeti is seven to nine hours of driving. Flying converts that into forty minutes for a few hundred dollars — often the best value upgrade on the entire trip, particularly for shorter itineraries where a day lost to driving is a large fraction of the trip.

The part that changes everything

Accommodation. The same parks, the same wildlife, the same guide, and a nightly rate that runs from budget camping to figures that would cover a week elsewhere. What you get as you move up: better locations inside the parks rather than outside the gates, fewer rooms, better food, better guiding included, and — most valuable of all — less time driving to reach the animals.

The location point is underrated. A cheaper lodge outside the park boundary can add ninety minutes each way to every game drive. Over four days that is a full day of your holiday spent commuting.

What different budgets actually buy

Budget camping. Public campsites, shared facilities, simple food, longer drives. You will see exactly the same animals as everyone else. It is genuinely fine, and it is how a lot of the best trips we run are done.

Mid-range lodges and tented camps. Private bathroom, decent food, comfortable bed, locations either inside the park or close to a gate. This is where most people land and where the value curve is steepest.

Premium and luxury camps. Prime locations, small guest numbers, excellent guiding, and the sense of having the landscape to yourself. Worth it if the experience matters more than the cost; not necessary to see the wildlife.

Costs people forget

• Tipping. Customary and expected. Operators generally publish guidance in the region of thirty to fifty dollars per vehicle per day for the driver-guide, plus a communal camp box. Budget for it upfront rather than discovering it at the end.
• Flights between parks. Often not in the headline price.
• Drinks. Included at some camps, charged at others, and the difference over a week is meaningful.
• Visa. Payable on arrival or in advance.
• Insurance. Non-negotiable, and it must cover evacuation.
• Balloon safari. A significant single-item cost, and worth it once.

If your budget will not stretch to what you have described, we say so and show you what it will reach — a shorter trip done properly usually beats a longer trip done thinly.
