Moshi exists because of the railway. The German line reached here in 1912 to move Chagga coffee down to Tanga and the coast, and the town was laid out around that function.
The walk takes in the old station — colonial-era, still standing, with Kilimanjaro directly behind it on a clear morning — then the clock tower, the Askari monument, the mosque and cathedral within a few streets of each other, and the residential blocks where the town actually lives.
Moshi Central Market is the loud middle section: spices, dried fish brought up from the coast, produce from the mountain, kitenge in stacks, and coffee traders. It is a working market, not a tourist one, and your guide will tell you when a price is fair.
We finish with coffee somewhere the local roasters drink. Moshi has a real café culture because it sits in the middle of the growing region, and the coffee is genuinely good.
Two to three hours on foot, flat, easy. Go early: the market is at full volume and Kilimanjaro usually clouds over by nine.

Not on this particular trip. The entrance fee here is a community or village fee, which is the same for everyone — there is no government differential to pass on, so we do not pretend there is one.
