Lake Duluti Canoeing

What to Expect
  • Canoeing on a crater lake
  • Forest birdwatching
  • Easy half-day from Arusha
  • Pairs with a coffee tour

Lake Duluti is a small crater lake fringed by forest reserve close to Arusha. A guided canoe outing glides past the wooded shoreline where kingfishers, herons and fish eagles are common, and a walking trail circles part of the forest edge.

It makes an easy half-day, often paired with a coffee-estate visit.

Why you’ll love it

Watching from the water changes your angle on everything.

On the Rufiji in Nyerere, or the Wami at Saadani, you approach wildlife from the water — which animals read completely differently to a vehicle. Elephants come down to drink and carry on. Hippo pods are at eye level. Crocodiles are on every bank, and you understand how large they are for the first time.

Birding from a boat is exceptional: skimmers working the shallows, fish eagles, kingfishers, herons at arm's length.

It is also restful in a way a game drive is not. After three days of corrugated road, two hours on flat water is its own argument.
